History of Al Qasimi Palace
Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Humaid Al Qasimi, a member of the ruling family of Ras Al Khaimah, built the palace on a hill overlooking Al Dhait in 1985. Artisans from Iran, Morocco, India and China created its mosaics, painted tiles and frescoes, and the construction reportedly cost more than AED 500 million. The built up area covers about 33,827 square feet on a plot of around 191,742 square feet. Sheikh Abdulaziz never lived in the palace, and it stayed empty for nearly 35 years.
In 2019 businessman Tareq Ahmad Al Sharhan bought the palace from the heirs of the late Sheikh. He restored its murals, sculptures, tiles, furniture and gardens, renamed it Al Qasr Al Ghamedh, and opened it to visitors as a privately owned museum.
Why is Al Qasimi Palace called the haunted palace?
Local legend says the family moved in, spent a single night and left, convinced the house was home to jinn. Stories of flickering lights and footsteps grew over the years while the building sat empty on its hill. The more likely reason the palace stayed empty is that the family objected to the sculptures and artworks showing human and animal figures, which appear throughout the building alongside the signs of the zodiac.
There is no evidence that the palace is haunted. Today the legend is simply part of the charm, and visitors come for the architecture, the story and the chance to walk through a place that was closed for a generation.
