What is Masfout Ajman?

Masfout Ajman is an exclave, which means it sits apart from the rest of the emirate. To reach it from Ajman city you pass through Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah territory before climbing into the mountains. The village and its neighbour Sayh Mudayrah are home to around 9,000 people, according to the last published census.

The area is famous for fertile farmland, high quality marble and a climate that stays cooler and drier than the coast. Families from across the UAE come here to hike, picnic by the dams, see old forts and simply slow down. It is not a theme park or a beach destination, and that quiet, rural feel is exactly why people love it.

Why Masfout is in the news

In October 2025 Masfout was named one of the World’s Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism, as reported by Khaleej Times, after competing with 270 villages from 65 countries. The award recognises villages that protect their farming traditions, heritage and community values while welcoming visitors.

In February 2026 the Ruler of Ajman opened the new Masfout Gate, a 16 metre tall landmark gateway with a 40 metre walkway built under the UAE villages development programme. Masfout also hosted the launch of an edition of the national World’s Coolest Winter campaign, so expect more events, upgraded facilities and more visitors in the cooler months.

How to get to Masfout Ajman

Most visitors drive, since there is no direct public transport for tourists. Visit Ajman recommends the Sharjah Kalba Road for non GCC nationals, because the Dubai Hatta Road (E44) passes an Oman border post that is open to GCC nationals only. The Sharjah Kalba Road route is the simplest choice for UAE residents and tourists.

  • Ajman şehrinden: take Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street, join Emirates Road (E611), then follow the Sharjah Kalba Road (E102) to the Masfout turn at the foot of the castle mountain. The trip is about 120 km.
  • Dubai'den: take Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) or Emirates Road (E611) north to the Sharjah Kalba Road (E102), then follow signs for Masfout.
  • Sharjah'dan: join the Sharjah Kalba Road (E102) and drive east through the dunes into the mountains.
  • Fuel and supplies: fill up and buy water before the last stretch, as shops and stations are limited near the village.
  • Sinyal: download your map offline, as mobile coverage can drop in the valleys.

Prefer not to drive? White Sky can arrange a private car with driver from Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman, so you can enjoy the views instead of the road.

Best things to do in Masfout Ajman

Masfout Kalesi

Perched on a rocky hill on the northern edge of town, Masfout Castle is the village’s most famous landmark. The 19th century tower was built from stone, mud and local timber, with two rooms and a gate, and it once guarded the route used by caravans heading to Oman. It was restored in the late 1940s by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi. Walk up for wide views over the farms, the wadi and the peaks around Hatta.

Bin Sultan Camii

This small 19th century mosque, built around 1815 from clay and plaster with a roof of date palm trunks, shows how mosques were built in the mountains long before modern materials. Visitors can view it from outside; dress modestly and avoid prayer times.

Masfout Müzesi

The Masfout Museum tells the story of the town and its people, from mountain farming and water channels to tribal history. It is a good shady stop in the middle of the day, and timings may change, so ask our team to check before you go.

Kholaiban Dam hiking loop

The signposted trail around Kholaiban Dam is the most popular hike in Masfout. It climbs gently from about 350 m to around 515 m, with green valleys on one side and bare rock on the other. Allow two to three hours, start early, wear proper shoes and carry plenty of water.

Masfoot Walk and Masfout Oasis

A paved walkway runs from the dam through the eastern side of town to the castle, with benches along the way and a waterway that flows in the cooler months. Nearby, the Masfout Oasis and its old falaj channels still feed the surrounding date and vegetable farms.

Watchtowers, viewpoints and Masfout Gate

Look out for Al Bomah Tower, which watches over the mountain pass between Masfout and Hatta, and Al Hamam Tower in Wadi Hadf. Experienced hikers head up Jabal Al Abyad, at about 559 m, for sunset views. On the way in, stop at the new Masfout Gate for photos.

Waraqa Park, picnics and camping

Waraqa Park, a landscaped green space of about 13,500 square metres around the former house of Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, is great for families. The dams and wadis also suit picnics, bird watching, mountain biking and winter camping. Take all rubbish home and stay off private farmland.

  • Hatta Resorts: choose from Damani Lodges overlooking the dam, the Hatta Dome Park domes or the Sedr Trailers for a fun caravan stay.

Best time to visit Masfout Ajman

October to April is the best season to visit Masfout Ajman, with cool mornings, comfortable afternoons and chilly evenings that are perfect for camping. Summer is cooler than the coast thanks to the altitude, but midday heat can still pass 40C, so visit early or late. Avoid the trip for a day after heavy rain, as wadis and low roads can flood quickly.

A simple one day Masfout Ajman itinerary

  • Sabahın erken saatleri: leave Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman around 7am and stop at Masfout Gate for photos.
  • Mid morning: hike the Kholaiban Dam loop while it is still cool.
  • Sabahın geç saatlerinde: visit Masfout Castle and Bin Sultan Mosque.
  • Öğle yemeği: picnic at Waraqa Park or by the dam, then visit the Masfout Museum in the shade.
  • Öğleden sonra: drive to Hatta for kayaking on Hatta Dam or a walk at Hatta Heritage Village.
  • Akşam: stay overnight at a Hatta resort or drive back before dark.

Tips for visiting Masfout Ajman

  • Carry water, snacks, sun protection and a light jacket in winter.
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip for the trails.
  • Dress modestly, especially near the mosque and in the village.
  • Do not enter private farms without permission and never block farm access roads.
  • Stay on paved roads unless you have a 4×4 and experience.
  • Speed limits on mountain roads are lower than on highways and are enforced by radar.
  • Keep a printed or offline copy of your hotel and driver details.

When Masfout isn’t the right choice

If you want a beach day, a mall or a big resort pool, choose a coastal destination such as Ajman city instead. Travellers who feel unwell on winding roads may prefer flatter places, and if it has rained heavily in the past 24 hours, postpone your trip, as mountain roads flood fast.
