Best things to do in Umm Al Quwain
Umm Al Quwain National Museum (Al Ali Fort)
The national museum is housed inside Al Ali Fort, one of the oldest buildings in the emirate and once the seat of the ruling family. Its rooms display weapons, jewellery, pottery and finds from local archaeological sites such as Ed Dur, giving a good picture of life in the emirate over the centuries.
Old Town and harbour
Near the museum, the old town keeps coral stone houses, narrow lanes and a working harbour where you can still see fishing boats and traditional dhows. It is an easy place to walk for an hour and take photos of a side of the UAE that has changed very little.
Mangrove kayaking
The lagoons of Umm Al Quwain are lined with dense mangroves and calm, shallow water, which makes them ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. Trips usually start from Mangrove Beach and the Khor Al Beidah area, and you may spot herons, crabs and small fish along the way.
Flamingos and bird watching at Khor Al Beidah
Khor Al Beidah and the wetlands around Al Sinniyah Island are among the best bird watching spots in the northern emirates. Flamingos are most often seen between November and March, along with many migratory birds in the winter months.
Al Sinniyah Island
Al Sinniyah is a protected island of mangroves and sandbanks just off the coast. It is home to large bird colonies and to important archaeological finds, including the remains of an ancient pearling town. Access is by boat and visits are controlled to protect the island, so join an organised trip rather than going on your own.
Ed Dur archaeological site
Ed Dur is one of the largest pre Islamic settlements in the UAE, overlooking Khor Al Beidah. The site is fenced and protected, so public access is limited, but many of its finds are on display at the national museum.
Kitesurfing and water sports
Steady winds and open beaches make Umm Al Quwain a favourite for kitesurfing. Kite Beach Center and nearby marinas offer equipment rental, lessons for beginners and beach access for other water sports.
Dreamland Aqua Park
Opened in 1997, Dreamland is one of the UAE’s longest running water parks, with more than 30 slides and rides, a wave pool and family areas. Opening days are seasonal, so check the schedule before you plan your visit.
Quiet beaches
Umm Al Quwain’s beaches are far less crowded than those in Dubai. Beachfront resorts offer day passes, and the calm water suits families with young children.
