Where Is the Al Quaa Milky Way Spot?

The spot is in the open desert near Al Qua’a, a remote area in the Al Ain Region of Abu Dhabi emirate. It is not the same place as the Al Khatim desert, which lies closer to the Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway and has more light from nearby roads. Al Qua’a is much further from towns, which is why the sky here is so dark and why it has become the most popular Milky Way location in the country.

How to Get to the Al Quaa Milky Way Spot

From Dubai and Sharjah you can use E611 (Emirates Road), E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) or E66 (Dubai Al Ain Road), then follow the exits towards Al Ain and continue on the desert truck roads towards Al Qua’a. From Abu Dhabi the drive is shorter, at roughly 90 minutes. A few kilometres before the spot you will pass a gate that opens on its own. Drive through slowly. After the gate, any place away from car headlights works well. Look south to southeast, find the Scorpius constellation and the teapot shape of Sagittarius, and the faint cloudy band rising from that area is the Milky Way. It climbs higher and becomes clearer as the night goes on.

From October to March the core sets early in the evening and is mostly hidden, but the nights are cooler and more comfortable. This is a lovely time for desert camping, winter constellations like Orion and meteor showers, even if the Milky Way itself looks fainter than in summer.

There is nothing to buy at the spot, so pack everything you need before you set off:
