What Is Wadi Shawka?
Wadi Shawka sits near Shawka village in the south of Ras Al Khaimah, around 421 metres above sea level and close to the borders with Sharjah and Fujairah. The name roughly translates as “powerful valley”. The wadi runs from the village of Khari, north of Shawka, and joins Wadi Esfai and Wadi Ejili. Farms are still worked here, and the stone ruins of old abandoned settlements line the valley sides.
The one thing many visitors get wrong is expecting a river. Most of the year the wadi bed is dry or nearly dry, and the pools only fill after good winter rain.
Shawka Dam and the Natural Pools
Shawka Dam was built in 2001 on the instructions of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and is one of the largest dams in the UAE. It stands about 13 metres high and 107 metres long and can hold around 275,000 cubic metres of water. The park beside the dam has a children’s play area, barbecue spots, shaded seating, restrooms and parking, and a few small shops near the entrance sell basic supplies.
Past the dam, a dirt track and footpath lead to the Shawka pools, natural rock pools that form after rainfall. They are lovely for a winter dip, but water levels change from week to week, so treat a swim as a bonus rather than the main plan.
Things to Do at Wadi Shawka
- Đi bộ: marked trails range from short family walks around the dam to longer ridge routes for fit hikers.
- Đạp xe leo núi: bike trails of around 10 km run between the dam and the pools, with sections for different skill levels.
- Camping and stargazing: flat gravel areas above the wadi bed are popular for overnight stays, with dark skies away from city lights.
- Dã ngoại và tiệc nướng: the dam park has barbecue areas and shaded seating for families.
- Phát hiện động vật hoang dã: look out for mountain goats, foxes, lizards and eagles, especially in the cooler months.
- Nhiếp ảnh: the dam, the old village ruins and sunset over the ridges make great photos.
How to Get to Wadi Shawka from Dubai
Wadi Shawka is around 90 to 110 km from Dubai depending on where you start, and the drive usually takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no public transport to the wadi, so a private car or an arranged transfer is the easiest way to get there.
- Từ Dubai: take E611 or E311 toward Sharjah, join the E102 toward Al Dhaid, continue past Mleiha and turn at the Shawka intersection, then follow the signs to the dam.
- From Ras Al Khaimah city: take the E18 Al Manama road to the E88 junction, turn right, take the first left just before the ADNOC station and follow the Wadi Shawka signs.
- Which car: a normal sedan reaches the dam parking on the paved road. A 4×4 is only needed for the rough track toward the first pool.
- Địa Chỉ: Off Kadra Road, Shawka, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
Ghé thăm Ras Al Khaimah, the emirate’s official tourism board, lists Wadi Shawka among its top outdoor adventure spots for hiking, cycling and camping.
Cách Lên Kế Hoạch Cho Chuyến Đi Của Bạn
- Hãy chọn mùa bạn thích. November to April gives you mild weather, roughly 18 to 28°C during the day. Summer visits should start before sunrise.
- Đến sớm. Reach the parking area by 8 am on weekends, as it fills up and the sun gets strong quickly.
- Chọn tuyến đường của bạn. Families can stay around the dam park, while hikers can head for the pools or the ridge trails.
- Bring more water than you think. Carry at least 3 litres per person for half a day, plus salty snacks.
- Wear proper shoes. The shale rock is sharp and loose. Running shoes with good grip work, sandals do not.
- Pack a torch and first aid kit. There is no lighting on the trails.
- Leave before dark unless you are camping.
The most important call is the weather. Check the forecast from the Trung tâm Khí tượng Quốc gia UAE before you leave. If rain is forecast or has fallen recently, stay out of the wadi bed, because flash floods can arrive quickly from upstream.

Details Experienced Hikers Get Right
Preparation is mostly about the sun and the ground. Check your position partway through, not just at the start. If you can still see the dam, you are on the easy side. If the trail has narrowed to a scramble, you have drifted onto a ridge route.
The mistake that costs people the most is wearing smooth sandals and carrying one small bottle. Twisted ankles and dehydration end more trips here than anything else, and the shops at the entrance are your last chance to buy supplies.

| Trail disappears into rocks | You have left the marked path | Turn back to the last marker |
| Điện thoại không có sóng | You are deep in the valley | Move to higher open ground |
| Car scraping the ground | You have driven past the paved area | Park and walk the rest |
| Sudden cloud burst upstream | Nguy cơ lũ quét | Climb to high ground immediately |
Camping Rules and Safety in Ras Al Khaimah
Camping at Wadi Shawka is free, and the flat areas near the trails and the dam are the usual spots. Each winter Ras Al Khaimah Police remind campers to keep noise down, drive slowly near family campsites, wear a helmet when cycling and keep children seated inside vehicles. Camping on public beaches in Ras Al Khaimah is not allowed, which makes mountain areas like Wadi Shawka a popular choice.
Pitch your tent on raised ground, never inside the wadi bed. Use barbecues and stoves carefully, avoid open fires on windy days, and take all rubbish home, as littering can lead to fines. During unstable weather, police advise staying away from valleys and water channels altogether. In an emergency, call 999 for police or 998 for an ambulance.

Sau chuyến đi của bạn
Pack out everything you brought in, including food scraps. Check your shoes and car for mud and stones before driving back. If you camped, air out your gear within a day or two so dampness does not ruin it.
Khi nào thì bỏ qua nó
If you want a guaranteed swim, a beach or water park is a better choice, because the pools here depend entirely on rainfall. If you are travelling with very small children in summer, choose an indoor attraction in Dubai, as the heat makes the wadi unsafe by mid morning. And if you want cafes and restaurants on site, a developed park will suit you better.
