Planning a trip to the UAE is exciting — but there are situations where your visa application may be declined outright, or you could be turned away at the airport even with a visa in hand. Understanding these scenarios before you apply can save you time, money, and a lot of stress.
At White Sky Travel and Tourism, we handle UAE tourist visa applications every day and help travelers navigate tricky situations. This article covers the most common — and some lesser-known — reasons why UAE visas are refused, and what happens in special passport cases.

1. Single-Name Passport (Mononym Passports)
This is one of the most frequently misunderstood issues for travelers from Indonesia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Bhutan, parts of India, and several African countries where single names are common on passports.
The UAE immigration system — managed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for all emirates except Dubai, and by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for Dubai — requires both a given name and a surname to process a visa application. If your passport carries only one name, a UAE tourist or visit visa cannot be applied for or issued under standard procedures.
What the rules say:
- As of November 2022, travelers on tourist or visit visas with only one name on their passport are not permitted to travel to the UAE.
- Holders of UAE residence or employment visas with a single name may still travel, provided their visa was originally issued in that format.
- Since January 2025, single-name passport holders applying for tourist entry are generally only considered eligible if a father’s name or family name appears on the second (observations/remarks) page of the passport.
What to do:
If your passport shows only one name and no additional name appears anywhere in the travel document, the most reliable course of action is to update your passport at your country’s passport authority to include both a first name and a last name before applying for a UAE visa. Trying to apply without addressing this issue will almost certainly result in refusal.
⚠️ Note: There is no single formal published policy page from ICP or GDRFA on this specific issue. The rules have been communicated through airline directives and immigration practice. For the most current guidance, contact us directly or verify with the official UAE immigration helplines listed at the end of this article.
2. Incomplete or Placeholder Date of Birth on the Passport
UAE immigration requires a complete, numerical date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format on your passport. There are several passport scenarios where this becomes a problem:
“XX” or “00” placeholders in the date of birth: Some passports — particularly older Australian passports or documents from countries where the exact birth date was not recorded at the time of issue — may show a partial date such as XX FEB 1980 or 00/00/0000. The UAE does not accept these. Even if you already hold an approved UAE visa, you will be refused boarding or denied entry at the airport if your passport shows any placeholder in the date of birth field.
📌 Confirmed by the Australian Government’s Smartraveller advisory: smartraveller.gov.au – UAE
Lebanese older passports — year only, no day or month: Older Lebanese passports, particularly those issued many years ago, sometimes record only the year of birth without a specific day or month (for example: 1978 with no further detail). This incomplete date of birth causes issues during UAE visa application processing, as the system cannot accept a year-only entry. Lebanese travelers holding such passports should renew their passport to obtain a fully dated document before applying for a UAE visa or traveling to the UAE.
Solution for all cases: Contact your country’s passport authority to have your passport reissued with a confirmed, complete date of birth in full DD/MM/YYYY format before applying.
3. Gender Marker Issues — “X” on the Passport
The UAE only recognizes M (Male) and F (Female) gender designations on travel documents.
Passports that carry an “X” gender marker — which some countries now issue for non-binary or unspecified gender — are not accepted for entry into, or even transit through, the UAE. Travelers with such passports will be denied boarding by airlines following UAE advance passenger information (API) rules, or refused entry upon arrival.
Additionally, if there is a visible mismatch between your physical appearance and the gender stated in your passport and visa, UAE immigration officers may deny your entry.

4. Handwritten Passports
Since November 2015, UAE immigration has not accepted handwritten passports in any form. All passports must be machine-readable (MRP) with a chip or a machine-readable zone (MRZ) at the bottom of the bio-data page.
Travelers arriving with handwritten passports will be automatically refused entry. This issue is particularly relevant for older passports from South Asia and parts of Africa that were issued before machine-readable standards were enforced.
What to do: Renew your passport before applying for a UAE visa or booking travel.

5. Emergency Passports
The UAE government does not accept emergency or temporary passports for entry.
- The U.S. 12-page emergency passport is specifically excluded.
- Australian emergency passports are also not accepted.
- Emergency passports issued by most other countries face similar restrictions.
If your regular passport is lost or damaged while traveling, contact your country’s embassy or consulate to arrange repatriation through official channels rather than attempting UAE entry on an emergency document.

6. Extended Validity or Amended Passports
Some passports have had their validity manually extended or amended beyond the original printed expiry date — an administrative practice that was used by certain countries’ authorities in the past.
Whether UAE immigration accepts such a passport depends on the individual case and the issuing country. Some extended passports have been approved; others have not. It is not a guaranteed refusal, but it does carry a higher risk of scrutiny or rejection during the application or at the airport. If your passport has an amended validity date and you are unsure whether it will be accepted, we strongly recommend consulting with a licensed visa agent before applying or booking flights.
7. Passport Validity Less Than 6 Months
This is one of the most common and entirely avoidable reasons for a UAE visa refusal or denied boarding — and it catches travelers off guard more often than you would expect.
The UAE requires your passport to be valid for a minimum of 6 months from your date of entry. This rule applies at both the visa application stage and at the airport on the day you travel. If your passport expires within 6 months of your intended arrival date, your visa application will be rejected outright. Even if a visa was somehow issued, the airline will deny you boarding during check-in as airlines are required to verify this under UAE Advance Passenger Information (API) rules.
Example: If you are travelling to the UAE on 1 June 2027, your passport must be valid until at least 1 December 2027 or later. A passport expiring on 30 November 2027 would not be accepted.
What to do: Always check your passport expiry date before applying for any UAE visa or booking flights. If your passport expires within 6 months of your planned travel date, renew it first. Passport renewal timelines vary by country, so factor in processing time — especially during peak travel seasons.

8. Typos, Data Errors, and Poor-Quality Document Scans
This is one of the most avoidable — yet most common — reasons for visa delays and refusals. The UAE immigration system cross-checks every detail automatically, and even small mistakes or low-quality uploads can trigger a rejection.
Common data errors that cause problems:
- Misspelling of your name (even by one letter)
- Incorrect passport number
- Wrong or mismatched date of birth
- Incorrect profession or occupation code
- Dates that do not match your flight or hotel booking
Important: If the name or date of birth on your application does not match exactly what is printed in your passport, your visa will likely be delayed or refused. This is especially critical if your name is spelled differently across documents (e.g., your passport says “Mohammed” but your booking says “Muhammad”).
Poor-quality passport scans and photos:
Just as important as the data you enter is the quality of the documents you upload. Visa applications are frequently delayed or rejected because of:
- Blurry or out-of-focus passport scans — the machine-readable zone (MRZ) at the bottom must be clearly legible
- Cropped passport copies — all four edges of the bio-data page must be fully visible; cutting off any corner or edge will cause rejection
- Light reflections or glare on the passport photo or laminate — this is a very common issue when photographing a passport with a phone camera
- Old or faded passport copies submitted as supporting documents — these are often unclear and fail the automated document check
- Passport photos (the portrait) that are blurry, have an incorrect background color, show shadows on the face, or do not meet ICAO size standards
Always scan your passport on a flatbed scanner if possible, or photograph it on a flat dark surface in good, even lighting — no flash. The bio-data page, including your photo, name, passport number, and MRZ lines, must all be sharp and fully visible.
9. Applying With a Newly Issued Passport — Always Attach Your Old Passport
This is a situation many travelers overlook, and it causes unnecessary delays. If you recently renewed or replaced your passport and are applying for a UAE visa with the new one — but you have previously visited the UAE on your old passport — your application may be returned with a request to submit the old passport copy as well.
UAE immigration systems link travel history to passport numbers. When a new passport number appears with no prior UAE travel history, but the system detects a possible existing record (from the old passport) under the same name and date of birth, it triggers a manual review. The application is then sent back requiring the old passport’s bio-data page to be attached.
What this means in practice: Your application is not rejected — but it is delayed while you are asked to resubmit with the additional document. This can add several days to your processing time, which is a problem if you have flights already booked.
Best practice: Whenever applying for a UAE visa on a new passport, always include a clear copy of your previous (old) passport’s bio-data page as a supporting document, even if not explicitly asked for. This proactively prevents the application from being returned and keeps your processing on track.
10. Uncancelled Previous UAE Residence Visa
If you previously held a UAE residence visa and left the country without officially cancelling it, your old visa record remains active in the immigration system. Any new visa application — tourist or otherwise — will be blocked until that record is cleared.
What to do: Your previous UAE sponsor (employer or family member) must officially cancel the visa through GDRFA or ICP before a new application can be submitted. This process requires coordination with the original sponsor and cannot be done by the traveler alone from outside the UAE.

11. Pending or Abandoned Visa Applications — Must Be Closed First
This is a situation that catches many applicants by surprise. If you (or someone on your behalf) previously submitted a UAE visa application — whether through the GDRFA portal, ICP Smart Services, or an agent — and that application was never completed, withdrawn, or resolved, it may remain active as a pending record in the immigration system.
The critical point most people miss is this: once an application number has been generated, that application officially exists in the UAE immigration system. It does not expire on its own, it does not disappear, and it is not automatically cancelled if you stop responding or walk away. Until it is formally closed, the system will block any new application submitted against the same passport.
When you later try to submit a new application, the system detects the existing open case and returns the new application — as only one active application per passport is permitted at a time.
Common scenarios where this happens:
- An applicant starts an online application, receives an application number, but abandons it midway without cancelling it
- An application is submitted through a travel agent or typing centre, an application number is generated, then the applicant tries to apply again through a different agent without knowing the first is still open
- A visa is applied for via GDRFA or ICP directly, the applicant assumes it “expired” or “timed out” without realising the generated application number keeps the record active
What to do: Once an application number has been issued, the application must be formally withdrawn or closed through the same channel it was submitted — either through the original agent, the GDRFA portal, or ICP Smart Services — before a new application can proceed. If you are unsure whether you have an open application in the system, check your application status through the official portals:
- GDRFA Dubai: gdrfad.gov.ae
- ICP (all other emirates): smartservices.icp.gov.ae
📌 Confirmed by the U.S. State Department UAE advisory: all UAE visas — including unused and pending ones — must be formally cancelled through GDRFA before a new visa can be issued. travel.state.gov – UAE
12. Previously Approved Tourist Visa — Never Used
If you applied for a UAE tourist visa, it was approved, but you never traveled — and you did not cancel or let it expire cleanly in the system — this can cause a block on new applications.
Your sponsor or travel agent needs to formally close or cancel that old visa record before a fresh application can be submitted.
13. Overstay History and Unpaid Fines
If you overstayed a previous UAE visa, you are likely:
- Subject to an entry ban (duration depends on the length of the overstay)
- Required to pay accumulated fines before any new visa will be considered
Overstay fines can be checked and paid through the official ICP Smart Services portal at smartservices.icp.gov.ae or through the GDRFA Dubai platform at gdrfad.gov.ae for Dubai-issued visas.
14. Criminal Record or UAE Immigration Blacklist
Applicants with a history of:
- Criminal offences, fraud, or misconduct in the UAE
- Prior deportation from the UAE
- Absconding records (for former employees)
…will face outright visa refusal and are typically blacklisted in the UAE immigration system. Clearing such records requires legal intervention and coordination with UAE immigration authorities.

15. Unskilled Profession Declared on the Passport
UAE immigration applies occupational screening during the visa process. Passports or applications that declare unskilled professions — such as farmer, labourer, or similar categories — often face automatic scrutiny or refusal for tourist and visit visas.
If your passport or national ID carries an unskilled occupation designation, consult with a licensed visa agent (like our team at White Sky Travel) to assess your eligibility and the right visa category to apply for.
16. Medical Fitness — For Residence and Work Visas
For anyone applying for a work or residence visa, the UAE requires a full medical examination after arrival in the UAE. The exam tests for:
- HIV/AIDS
- Active tuberculosis
- Viral hepatitis B
- Leprosy
- Pregnancy (for certain visa categories)
Testing positive for any of these conditions may result in deportation. Medical tests performed outside the UAE are not accepted — they must be done at approved UAE medical centers.
17. Alien Passport (Travel Document) Holders — Visa on Arrival Does Not Apply
This is a less commonly discussed but important issue that affects a significant number of travelers, particularly those from Middle Eastern countries.
What is an alien passport?
An alien passport — also called a Certificate of Identity, Travel Document, or Alien’s Passport — is a travel document issued by a country to non-citizens who live within its borders but do not hold, or cannot obtain, a passport from their country of origin. This typically applies to:
- Stateless persons who are not recognized as nationals of any country
- Refugees who cannot safely use their home country’s passport
- Long-term residents (like the Bidoon community in Gulf states) who have residency in a country but hold no national citizenship
These travel documents look similar to passports and carry the holder’s personal details, but they are issued by the host country, not the holder’s country of origin — and they are not the same as a national passport.
📌 Reference: Wikipedia – Certificate of Identity | UNHCR – Travel Documents for Refugees and Stateless Persons
Countries known to issue alien passports / travel documents include:
- Kuwait — Issues an “Article 14 Passport” (gray cover) to stateless Bidoon residents who have no national citizenship
- Saudi Arabia — Issues travel documents to stateless residents and certain long-term non-citizen residents
- Jordan — Issues travel documents to Palestinian refugees and stateless persons residing in Jordan
- Lebanon — Issues travel documents to Palestinian refugees (from UNRWA-recognized camps) and some stateless residents
- Denmark, Germany, UK, and other European countries — Issue Convention Travel Documents (CTDs) to refugees and stateless persons under the 1951 Refugee Convention
- Latvia — Issues “Znepilsoņa” (non-citizen) passports to stateless Soviet-era residents
- Various other countries issue similar documents under different names
How this affects UAE visa and entry:
The key issue is this: visa on arrival eligibility is tied to the nationality of the passport, not the holder. If a country’s regular passport holders qualify for UAE visa on arrival (for example, Kuwaiti citizens or Saudi citizens), that does not automatically extend to holders of alien passports or travel documents issued by those same countries.
A holder of a Kuwaiti Article 14 alien passport, for example, cannot obtain a visa on arrival in the UAE even though Kuwaiti passport holders can. The same applies to holders of Jordanian travel documents, Saudi-issued non-citizen travel documents, and European Convention Travel Documents.
Alien passport holders must apply for a pre-arranged UAE visa before travel — they cannot assume on-arrival eligibility based on the issuing country’s normal visa status.
What to do if you hold an alien passport or travel document:
- Contact a licensed UAE visa agent (like our team at White Sky Travel) before booking any flights
- Apply for a UAE tourist visa through the standard pre-arrangement process — through GDRFA Dubai or ICP — well in advance of travel
- Ensure your travel document is machine-readable and has at least 6 months’ validity
- Be prepared for additional scrutiny during the application review process

Airport Situations You Need to Know About
Outstanding Fines, Legal Cases & Financial Disputes
The UAE has strict exit controls. Even if you have a valid visa and were never flagged at entry, you can be detained or barred from leaving the UAE at the airport if:
- You have outstanding criminal or civil legal cases
- You have unpaid financial judgments, including credit card debts
- There are unsettled financial disputes — even ones you may not be aware of
This is confirmed by the U.S. State Department and applies to tourists, residents, and transit passengers alike. Always settle all financial and legal matters in the UAE before attempting to depart.

Dual Nationality
The UAE does not officially recognize dual nationality. If you hold two passports, you must arrive and depart on the same passport. Switching passports mid-trip creates serious complications with exit records.
Passport on Which You Entered
You must always exit the UAE on the same passport you used to enter. If your passport is lost or stolen while in the UAE, you must visit a UAE immigration office to obtain an exit pass before you can legally depart.
Health Insurance for Tourists
Tourists arriving at Dubai (DXB) or Sharjah (SHJ) airports are required to have valid health insurance for the duration of their stay. Ensure your travel insurance policy includes medical coverage before your trip.
