For generations Masfout was a farming and trading town, known for tobacco, dates, millet and fine marble from the surrounding mountains. The tower on the ridge gave guards a clear view of every track leading into the valley, so they could warn the town of approaching raiders. How to get to Masfout Castle

1. दुबई से: take the Dubai Hatta Road (E44) towards Hatta. The drive takes around 90 minutes in normal traffic.
2. अजमान शहर से: take Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street, join Emirates Road, then follow the Sharjah Kalba Road to Masfout. The trip is about 120 km and takes roughly 90 minutes.
3. In Masfout: follow the brown signs for Al Boma Tower. Park in the open area at the foot of the hill; there is no parking fee.
4. The final walk: a short but steep path with uneven stone steps leads up to the tower. Wear closed shoes.

The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable time to visit. Masfout sits at around 800 metres above sea level, so it often feels a little cooler than Dubai, and after winter rain the wadis carry water and the hillsides turn green. In summer, go early in the morning and avoid the uphill walk in the midday heat. If heavy rain is forecast, postpone your trip, as mountain roads and wadis can become unsafe quickly.

Tips for visiting Masfout Castle

• Wear closed shoes, as the path to the tower is steep and uneven.
• Carry 2 to 3 litres of water per person, since there are no shops at the tower.
• Download an offline map, because mobile signal can be patchy in the mountains.
