History of the Jebel Hafeet Beehive Tombs

The Jebel Hafeet beehive tombs first drew modern attention in 1959, when a Danish archaeological team led by P.V. Glob came to the Al Ain area at the invitation of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Danish teams from Moesgaard Museum then excavated about 50 tombs between 1961 and 1971, the first archaeological digs in this part of Arabia.

Inside, they found pottery made in Mesopotamia during the Jemdet Nasr period, beads, and some of the earliest copper objects in the region. These finds show that people living near Jebel Hafeet traded with distant cities in today’s Iraq and were already working copper from the Hajar Mountains. Many of these finds are now on display at the Al Ain Museum, which reopened in October 2025 after a major redevelopment.

In 2011, UNESCO listed the Cultural Sites of Al Ain, including the Hafit tombs, as the UAE’s first World Heritage Site. Al Ain marked 15 years of that status in 2026.

Why the Jebel Hafeet Beehive Tombs Look Like Beehives

Builders of the Jebel Hafeet beehive tombs stacked rough, locally quarried stones without mortar to form a round chamber. Each layer leaned slightly inward until the walls closed at the top, which gives the tombs their famous beehive shape.

A small doorway led into the chamber, and Visit Abu Dhabi notes that each tomb usually held the remains of two to five people along with their grave goods. Many tombs collapsed over the centuries, while a group near Mezyad has been restored so visitors can see their original form.

How To Get To The Jebel Hafeet Beehive Tombs

The easiest way to see the Jebel Hafeet beehive tombs is through Jebel Hafit Desert Park, a nine kilometre park at the base of the mountain. Guided hikes lead to the restored and unrestored tombs, and you can also join a buggy escort or follow the self guided trails and signs. The park also offers hiking, mountain biking, camel and horse rides, and camping.

From Dubai, take the Dubai Al Ain Road (E66) to Al Ain, then follow signs for Jebel Hafeet and Mezyad. The trip covers about 160 km and takes around one hour and 50 minutes. Carry at least two litres of water per person, wear sturdy shoes, and plan two to three hours inside the park.
