Castillo de Masfout, listed on maps as Masfout Castle Al Boma Tower, is a 19th century stone watchtower on a hilltop at the northern edge of Masfout, the mountain enclave of Ajman in the Hajar Mountains. Built from stone, mud and local timber, it has two rooms and a gate, and once stood as the first line of defence against raiders on the route to Oman. It was restored in the late 1940s on the orders of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi. Today it is a free, open air heritage site about 90 minutes by car from Dubai or Ajman city, with wide views over the farms of Masfout, the village UN Tourism named one of the Best Tourism Villages in 2025.

History of Masfout Castle Al Boma Tower
For generations Masfout was a farming and trading town, known for tobacco, dates, millet and fine marble from the surrounding mountains. The tower on the ridge gave guards a clear view of every track leading into the valley, so they could warn the town of approaching raiders. According to Visita Ajman, the castle was built in the 19th century and later restored at the request of Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, which is why it still looks so complete today.
Down in the village, an old fortified tower house has been restored as Masfout Museum. It tells the story of mountain life, farming, schooling, crafts and local defence, including a weaponry room with an old cannon. Together, the hilltop tower and the museum are the two heritage highlights of Masfout.

Best time to visit Masfout Castle
The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable time to visit. Masfout sits at around 800 metres above sea level, so it often feels a little cooler than Dubai, and after winter rain the wadis carry water and the hillsides turn green. In summer, go early in the morning and avoid the uphill walk in the midday heat. If heavy rain is forecast, postpone your trip, as mountain roads and wadis can become unsafe quickly.
