What is the Mleiha desert?

The Mleiha desert is the stretch of red sand dunes, gravel plains and limestone hills around the town of Mleiha in Sharjah. Unlike the busy safari camps closer to Dubai, it is a protected landscape where nature and history meet. Archaeologists have found stone tools, Bronze Age tombs, an ancient fort and the remains of a trading town here, and the nearby mountains still hold marine fossils from a sea that covered the area millions of years ago. In 2025 the Faya Palaeolandscape became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for evidence of people living here from about 210,000 years ago. You can read the full listing on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre page. Today the desert is part of Mleiha National Park, where guided activities, camping areas and the visitor centre are run by Shurooq, as shown on the official Mleiha National Park website.

This guide focuses on the desert experience itself: dunes, sunsets, stargazing and nights under the sky. For the full area guide, including the museum and history, see our Mleiha Sharjah guide.

Where is the Mleiha desert and how to get there

The Mleiha desert lies along the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55) in central Sharjah. The main meeting point for tours is the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, off the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55), Mleiha, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

  • From Dubai: about 45 to 60 minutes. Take the Dubai Hatta Road (E44), then follow the E55 towards Mleiha.
  • From Sharjah city: about 40 to 50 minutes via the Sharjah Kalba Road (E102), then the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55).
  • From Abu Dhabi: about 2 hours by car.

There is no public transport to the Mleiha desert, and taxis back to the city are hard to find. A normal car is fine for the main roads and the centre, but you need a 4×4 and desert driving experience to go into the dunes. The easier option is a private transfer, which White Sky Travel and Tourism can arrange for you, or a guided tour run by the park.

Best things to do in the Mleiha desert

Sandboarding with the Sand Surfer experience

The Sand Surfer experience combines an off road SUV drive with sandboarding down the red dunes. It is open to guests aged 13 and above and is best in the late afternoon, when the sand has cooled and the light turns golden.

Dune Buggy Landscape Tour

This one hour guided buggy tour visits landmarks such as Camel Rock and Fossil Rock, with guides explaining the natural history along the way. It suits families, and children can join from eight years old and at least 140 cm tall.

Sunset drives at Camel Rock and Fossil Rock

Camel Rock, a lone rock shaped like a kneeling camel, is one of the most loved sunset spots in the Mleiha desert. Nearby, Fossil Rock rises above the dunes with shells and corals in its limestone slopes. The Refreshing Mleiha Sunset tour takes you there in an air conditioned vehicle and includes entry to the museum.

Stargazing in the Mleiha desert

With very little light pollution, the Mleiha desert is one of the best places in the UAE to see the night sky. Guided sessions use telescopes to show planets, the moon and deep sky objects, with talks from astronomy guides. Special nights are held for meteor showers such as the Geminids in December. For the darkest skies, pick a date close to a new moon.

Overnight camping and glamping

Mleiha Overnight Camping is a simple night under the stars, where you can bring your own food to grill or order a barbecue dinner. For more comfort, Mleiha glamping offers furnished tents in the cooler months, with Premium tents that have private bathrooms and Standard tents with shared facilities. Camping is only allowed in designated areas with a booked operator.

Horse riding and wildlife spotting

Guided horse rides cross the desert and suit all experience levels. Keep your camera ready, as Arabian gazelles and desert foxes live in the park and are often seen in the early morning and at dusk.

Family workshops and fossil hunts

The Flora and Fauna Workshop introduces children aged five and above to desert plants and animals, while the Fossil Fun Expedition lets families look at real fossils and take home a replica. Both are great add ons to a desert day with kids.

Aerial views of the desert

Sky Adventures flights give you a bird’s eye view of the dunes, Fossil Rock and the Faya mountains. They depend on the weather, so keep your plans flexible.

Activity timings, age limits and prices may change and T&C apply. For flights, hotels and transfers to the Mleiha desert, message White Sky Travel and Tourism on WhatsApp at +971 4 220 2133.

Best time to visit the Mleiha desert

October to March is the best season. Days are warm and pleasant for tours, and nights are cool enough for camping and stargazing. Winter nights can drop to around 10 to 15°C, so bring a jacket. From April to September, the desert gets very hot, so plan only early morning or evening activities and avoid being outdoors between 12 pm and 4 pm.

Weekends and public holidays are the busiest time, especially for glamping and stargazing nights. Book at least a few days ahead, and earlier for special sky events.

How to plan your Mleiha desert day

  1. Choose your experience first: a sunset tour, sandboarding, stargazing or an overnight stay.
  2. Book your activity, then ask White Sky Travel and Tourism for a hotel stay and a return transfer if you do not want to drive.
  3. Arrive at the Mleiha Archaeological Centre about 30 minutes before your slot.
  4. Do the outdoor activities in the late afternoon, when it is cooler.
  5. Watch the sunset from the dunes or Camel Rock.
  6. Stay for stargazing, a barbecue dinner or a night in the desert.

The single choice that shapes your whole day is timing. The same dunes feel completely different at sunset and at midday.

Desert safety tips

Wear closed shoes, as the sand and gravel get very hot and scorpions come out at night. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person in winter and more in warmer months. Phone signal can be weak in the dunes, so download an offline map and save the White Sky WhatsApp number before you leave the city.

Do not drive into the dunes in a normal car. Soft sand traps street tyres quickly, and recovery is costly. Join a guided tour or travel with an experienced desert driver.

Rules to follow in the Mleiha desert

The Mleiha desert is a protected UNESCO landscape. Stay on marked tracks, and never take rocks, fossils, pottery or anything else from the ground, as removing items breaks Sharjah heritage rules. Camping is only allowed in designated areas with a booked operator. Drones and commercial photo shoots need prior approval from the authorities. Take all your rubbish back with you.

Where to stay near the Mleiha desert

Staying overnight lets you enjoy sunset, stargazing and sunrise without a long drive back in the dark. Popular choices include:

  • Moon Retreat: dome shaped eco lodges in the Mleiha desert near Fossil Rock, part of the Sharjah Collection.
  • Al Faya Retreat: a small boutique stay in restored buildings at the foot of Jebel Faya.
  • Al Badayer Retreat by Sharjah Collection: a fort style desert resort among the red dunes of Al Badayer.
  • Mleiha Glamping: furnished tents in the desert during the cooler months.
  • Mleiha Overnight Camping: a budget friendly night under the stars.

White Sky Travel and Tourism can book your hotel stay, flights and transfers. As a travel agency with Tabby payment in Dubai, we let you split the cost with Tabby, Tamara or UAE credit card installments up to 12 months.

Places to visit near the Mleiha desert

The Mleiha desert is a great base for exploring central Sharjah. Add these stops to your trip:

  • Mleiha Archaeological Centre: the museum and visitor hub with finds from the area.
  • Jebel Faya: the mountain and caves at the heart of the UNESCO site.
  • Buhais Geology Park: a geology museum and trail with fossils from an ancient seabed.
  • Al Badayer: tall red dunes for dune bashing and quad biking.
  • XQuarry Adventure Park: off road tracks and camping inside a former quarry.
  • Al Dhaid Sharjah: an oasis town with farms, a fort and a wildlife museum.
  • Al Madam buried village: an abandoned village slowly filling with sand, popular with photographers.

When the Mleiha desert is not the right choice

The Mleiha desert is about nature, history and quiet nights, not resort style comfort. If you want pools, beaches and restaurants, a city or beach hotel is a better pick. The deep sand and uneven ground are hard for guests with limited mobility, and July and August are too hot for young children outdoors. In those cases, an indoor museum visit or a short evening stargazing session works better.
