What is Mleiha and why is it famous?
Mleiha sits on a wide gravel plain at the foot of Jebel Faya, in the inland desert between the Gulf coast and the Hajar Mountains. Archaeologists have found stone tools, Bronze Age tombs, Iron Age villages, an ancient fort and the remains of a large trading town here. The mountains around Mleiha were once part of an ancient seabed, which is why you can still find marine fossils in the middle of the desert.
In 2025, the Faya Palaeolandscape became the second UNESCO World Heritage Site in the UAE, after the Cultural Sites of Al Ain. UNESCO describes the site as a record of how hunter gatherers and herders adapted to a changing climate from about 210,000 to 6,000 years ago. Since then, the Sharjah Archaeology Authority has added a new interactive exhibition at the centre, better signage across the site and an official UNESCO monument, as reported by Gulf News.
Today the area is protected as Mleiha National Park, covering more than 34 square kilometres of desert, mountains and archaeological sites. It is managed by Shurooq, while the Sharjah Archaeology Authority leads the research. Mleiha Sharjah suits families, couples, history lovers, photographers and anyone who wants a real desert escape without a long drive. It is much more than a museum: most of the experience happens outdoors, so the season and the time of day shape your visit.
Where is Mleiha Sharjah and how to get there
Mleiha is in the central region of Sharjah, about 65 km southeast of Sharjah city and away from the city lights. It lies along the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55), between Al Dhaid to the north and Al Madam to the south, at the foot of Jebel Faya. The visitor hub is the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, off the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55), Mleiha, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Most sites, tours and stays are within a 15 minute drive of the centre.
From Dubai: the drive takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Take the Dubai Hatta Road (E44), exit at Al Ghareef roundabout towards the E55, and follow the signs to the Mleiha Archaeological Centre.
From Sharjah city: the drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes. Take the Sharjah Kalba Road (E102), then exit onto the Al Dhaid Mleiha Road (E55) near the Mleiha mosque. The exit for the centre comes about two minutes later.
From Abu Dhabi: plan for about 2 hours by car, heading towards Dubai and then on to the E44 or Emirates Road and the E55.
There is no public transport to Mleiha, and taxis are expensive with few options for the return trip, so a car or a private transfer is the easiest way to get there. A normal car is fine for the centre, Fossil Rock and the main roads, but you need a 4×4 to drive into the dunes. If you prefer not to drive in the desert, White Sky Travel and Tourism can arrange return transport with your tour or stay. Message us on WhatsApp at +971 4 220 2133.
Top things to do in Mleiha Sharjah
Mleiha Archaeological Centre
The centre is the starting point for every visit. It displays tools, pottery, jewellery and coins found in the area, explains the UNESCO story, and is where most tours begin. It also has a cafe, restrooms and shaded seating.
Fossil Rock
Fossil Rock, also called Jebel Mleiha, is about 11 minutes by car from the centre. Its limestone slopes hold shells, corals and other marine fossils from a sea that covered this area millions of years ago. A hiking trail of about 5 km return takes around 2 hours and has no shade, so start early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Guided hikes and 4×4 drives also run here, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Camel Rock and the Faya caves
Camel Rock is a lone rock formation shaped like a kneeling camel, about 9 minutes from the centre and a favourite sunset spot. A normal car can reach the parking area, followed by a short but steep walk over a dune, while a 4×4 can drive closer. The Valley of the Caves tour takes you to the Faya caves, a natural water spring and Bronze Age tombs, where some of the oldest evidence of people in Arabia was found.
Mleiha Fort and ancient tombs
The mud brick Mleiha Fort and the circular Umm an Nar tomb are just minutes from the centre. They show how people lived, traded and buried their dead here thousands of years ago.
Fossil hunt and archaeological tours
The fossil hunt is a hands on activity that kids love, while the archaeological tour takes you through the main excavation sites with a guide. The Jebel Buhais trek and the Mleiha Landscapes SUV tour are good picks if you want more adventure.
Mleiha stargazing
With very little light pollution, Mleiha Sharjah is one of the best places for stargazing near Dubai. Guided sessions use telescopes to show planets, the moon and star clusters. Book a date close to a new moon for the darkest skies.
Desert camping and sunset views
Overnight camping at Mleiha combines sunset views, dinner, stargazing and a night under the desert sky. Camping is only allowed in designated areas with a booked operator.
Mleiha desert dunes, buggies and SUV drives
The Mleiha desert is known for soft orange dunes, ghaf trees and the Al Faya mountains in the background. You can join a dune buggy ride, an SUV dune drive or the Mleiha Landscapes tour, which visits Fossil Rock, Camel Rock and other viewpoints in one trip.
The Sphinx and the Eye of Mleiha
Two of the most photographed natural formations in the area are the rock known as the Sphinx, which looks like a resting animal from the right angle, and the Eye of Mleiha, a round hollow in the rock that looks like an eye from above. Both are best visited with a local guide on a desert tour, as they are not signposted.
Abandoned lifeboats
Just off the main road near the centre, a few old ship lifeboats sit in the middle of the desert. Nobody is fully sure how they ended up here, which makes them a fun and unusual photo stop.
Horse riding at Mleiha Stables
Mleiha Stables offers guided horse rides across the desert, and you may spot Arabian gazelles grazing nearby. Rides can be booked at the centre or as part of your White Sky Mleiha package.
X Quarry Adventure Park
Off road fans can head to X Quarry, an adventure park inside a former quarry with trails for 4×4 driving, plus camping and barbecue areas.
New experiences at Mleiha this season
Mleiha National Park keeps adding new activities. The Stone Age Challenge, launched in October 2026, is a team building experience where groups play prehistoric tribes and complete heritage tasks at the UNESCO site. The Survive the Sands workshop teaches desert survival skills, and the Zerzura desert camp brings heritage inspired dining with sunset views, starting its season with Zerzura Sunsets on 14 November 2026.

Where to stay near Mleiha Sharjah
Staying overnight lets you enjoy sunset, stargazing and sunrise without the drive back in the dark. Popular options include:
- Moon Retreat: dome shaped eco lodges in the Mleiha desert near Fossil Rock, with private terraces and pools.
- Al Faya Retreat: a boutique stay in two restored buildings at the foot of Jebel Faya, being expanded from five rooms to 20 units by the end of 2026.
- Al Badayer Retreat: a fort style desert resort among the red dunes of Al Badayer, a short drive from Mleiha.
- Mleiha overnight camping: a simple camping package with dinner and stargazing for a budget friendly night in the desert.
Moon Retreat, Al Faya Retreat and Al Badayer Retreat are part of the Sharjah Collection, which Minor Hotels manages from October 2026. White Sky Travel and Tourism can book your stay and combine it with tours and transport. As a travel agency with Tabby payment in Dubai, we let you split the cost with Tabby, Tamara or UAE credit card installments up to 12 months.
Places to visit near Mleiha Sharjah

How to plan your Mleiha desert visit
- Pick your season first. October to March is comfortable during the day. From April to September, plan for early morning or evening only.
- Book with White Sky Travel and Tourism at least 2 to 3 days ahead for weekends and public holidays. Message us on WhatsApp at +971 4 220 2133.
- Arrange transport. Mleiha is about 45 to 60 minutes by car from Dubai and around 40 minutes from Sharjah city, or we can include return transfers.
- Arrive at the centre 30 minutes before your slot to check in and use the facilities.
- Do the trails and outdoor sites first, while it is cooler. Allow 1 to 2 hours at an easy pace.
- Break for food and water. Carry at least 2 litres per person, more in warmer months.
- Stay for sunset, then stargazing or camping if you have booked it. Desert nights cool down fast in winter, so bring a jacket.
The one judgement call that matters most is timing. The same site feels completely different at 8 am and at 2 pm, and no amount of planning fixes a midday visit in July.
Mleiha trip planner: time, gear and what to watch
These figures assume a standard day visit for one adult, with your own transport. Group tours and overnight camping change the timings, so add extra buffer for those.
| Situation | What to use | How long | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day visit, October to March | Light clothes, hat, sunscreen | 3 to 5 hours | Cold wind after sunset |
| Day visit, April to September | Early morning slot only | 2 to 3 hours | Heat exhaustion, dehydration |
| Stargazing trip | Jacket, closed shoes, red light torch | 3 to 4 hours | Cold desert nights in winter |
| Desert camping | Sleeping bag, warm layers, 3L water per person | Overnight | Book well ahead on weekends |
| Archaeological trail | Comfortable shoes, water | 1 to 2 hours | Uneven ground, no shade |
| Family trip with kids | Morning slot, snacks, hats | 2 to 3 hours | Toilets are only at the centre |
Tips for a great day in Mleiha
Calm, clear days give the best experience, because strong wind blows sand into your eyes and food. Check the forecast the day before. Follow a simple order: centre first, outdoor sites second, food and rest third, then sunset and the night sky. Leaving the trails until the end, when everyone is tired and the light is fading, is how people miss the best parts.
What to check partway through
Halfway into the trail, check how everyone feels. If someone is dizzy, has a headache, or has stopped sweating, that’s a heat warning sign. Stop, move to shade, drink water, and call for help if it doesn’t improve. Don’t push through it.
What to leave alone
Don’t pick up pottery pieces, bones, or anything else on the ground at the archaeological site. It’s protected, and removing items is against UAE heritage rules. Look, photograph, and leave it where it is.
Common Mleiha problems and quick fixes
| What you notice | What it usually means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Headache, dizziness, nausea | Heat stress or dehydration | Move to shade, sip water, cool the skin |
| Sand in eyes | Windy conditions | Rinse with clean water, don’t rub |
| Can’t see many stars | Moon is too bright or city glow | Book closer to a new moon date |
| Cold at night | Desert temperature drop | Add layers, use a proper sleeping bag |
| Long wait at entry | Peak weekend slot | Arrive 30 minutes early or pick a weekday |
Rules to follow at Mleiha National Park
The Mleiha archaeological sites are protected under Sharjah heritage law and managed by the Sharjah Archaeology Authority. Removing artefacts, digging or damaging the site carries legal penalties. Camping is only allowed in designated areas with a booked operator, not anywhere in the desert.
In summer, avoid outdoor activity between 12 pm and 4 pm. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant or are travelling with very young children, check with a doctor before a desert trip.
Before you leave for Mleiha
Once you have booked, save your confirmation and the White Sky WhatsApp number on your phone before you leave the city. Mobile signal in the desert can be weak, so download an offline map too. Confirm your pickup time the day before if transport is included.
The site looks different each season, and a winter trip and a spring trip feel like two different places, so many visitors come back for a second visit.
When Mleiha is not the right choice
If you want a resort style break with pools and restaurants, Mleiha Sharjah is the wrong pick. Look at a beach or city hotel instead. If you can’t handle heat or long walks on uneven ground, choose a short centre only visit rather than the full trail. And if you are travelling in July or August with young kids, a morning indoor activity in Sharjah city is a safer choice than an open desert trip.
