What to See Inside Zayed National Museum
The museum has six permanent galleries, one temporary exhibition space and one outdoor gallery. More than 1,500 objects were on display at opening, drawn from a permanent collection of over 3,000 items.
- To Our Ancestors: the story of the region from around 300,000 years ago to the Bronze Age.
- Through Our Connections: trade, travel and change from the Iron Age to the spread of Islam.
- Sheikh Zayedโs life and legacy: dedicated spaces that trace his journey, values and vision for the nation.
- Desert and sea heritage: pearling, seafaring, oasis farming and Bedouin traditions.
- Al Masar Garden: an outdoor gallery around 600 metres long that tells Sheikh Zayedโs story through native plants in desert, oasis and urban zones, including a working falaj irrigation system.
Star objects include the Abu Dhabi Pearl, believed to be one of the oldest natural pearls in the world, rare folios from the Blue Quran, and an 18 metre reconstruction of a Bronze Age Magan boat in the central atrium. Displays and temporary exhibitions change over time, so treat this as a guide to themes rather than a fixed list.
The Building and Its Design
Zayed National Museum was designed by Foster + Partners, the studio led by British architect Norman Foster. Five slender steel towers rise from a landscaped mound and curve like the feathers of a falconโs wing, a nod to falconry, one of Sheikh Zayedโs lifelong passions. The towers also work as thermal chimneys, drawing warm air up and out of the building to help keep the galleries cool in the Gulf climate.
